The borough of Swarthmore (or the Ville, as it is known to Swatties), being our next door neighbors here on campus, is a place often frequented by many Swatties who want a quick step off campus without having to go too far. Filled with an assortment of different shops, restaurants, and events, the Ville is the perfect place to go for either a quick break through the week or a fun adventure on the weekends. One place I particularly enjoy going to is the Swarthmore Farmers Market, which is held every Saturday morning from May to November.
Going to the farmers market on Saturday mornings is such a nice treat after a long week of work, socializing, and going to events here on campus. For me, even whenever I don’t end up actually buying anything, just going to the market is an amazing way to relax and start my weekend. However, there are many wonderful things to buy at this market, ranging from pastries to produce to flowers. Going to go see all of the people, hearing the live music that is often present, and browsing all the items for sale is an experience all on its own.
The farmers market is a place where all members of the community come together as well. Students from the college, locals who live in the area, and vendors from the surrounding neighborhoods all come together in the town square to shop, eat, socialize, and have a good time. The vibrant community of Swarthmore is on full display at the farmers market, and you can truly get a sense of what the community is like here.
Though I do enjoy all of the things about the farmers market, there are a few things in particular that I especially enjoy. First, the apple cider sold by a local farm is absolutely spectacular, and I always pick some up once it shows up in the fall. Then, the produce is always a nice treat as well. I always find myself stocking up on apples, berries, peaches, and other fruits from the market and enjoying them through the week. Lastly, the pastries from vendors like Big Sky Bread are always a nice treat to enjoy on the weekends, especially when enjoyed with some friends.
The farmers market is one of my favorite things about fall here at Swarthmore, and it is always such a treat to head over on a Saturday morning either by myself or with some friends. Whether it’s to grab some fresh produce, get a little sweet treat from a local bakery, or just browse the items and enjoy the bustling market, the farmers market is an amazing place to go every Saturday morning.
