For many students, finding a good place to study can be quite a task, especially when you have no idea where to look. On Swat’s campus, there are a multitude of different study spots, ranging from super quiet, to loud and collaborative. For me, at least, I’ve found that when I’m doing readings for a class or writing an essay, I need it to be absolutely quiet so I can focus all my energy and attention toward the task at hand. When completing more busy work, I often complete it in a more socially-active environment.
My favorite place to study by far is the newly built Singer Hall. Singer has tons of study spaces for the needs of all students — 2-12 person private study rooms, a main floor with lounge chairs and tables, and various large spaces dedicated to individual and group study. Depending on the time of day, the volume in Singer can vary, but even at peak time, it isn’t too loud, so I am able to concentrate on my readings and essays.

Another fantastic spot is the Science Center. It’s one of the most popular spots on campus as it has classrooms, a cafe, and an open common area. Sci tends to be the loudest around lunch time and in between classes. As such, it’s a good place to study if you are doing group work and want to socialize with friends. Oftentimes, I went to Sci to complete my easier homework that didn’t involve much concentrating since I also wanted to have some social interaction with my friends as well.

The Intercultural Center has some of the best spots on campus. I would describe it as a hidden gem since most students gravitate towards the libraries or the academic buildings. It’s newly renovated and has very comfortable lounge chairs, tables, and rooms to do private and group study. It’s a very active spot for social gatherings, but study-wise, it’s a great place to grind out work.

Finally, there are the libraries. I’m a big fan of the second floor of McCabe Library since it’s the quiet study floor. When I really need to hunker down and get work done, that’s the spot to go. They have tables and cubicles as well as private study rooms. I’ve found that bringing a jacket to McCabe is the way to go since it’s usually pretty cold. Another underrated study spot is Underhill Library. It overlooks the Crum Woods, is pretty quiet (at least in my experience), and is right near Science Center so you’re just a short walk away from a quick bite to eat.

The study locations on Swarthmore’s campus are immense and cater to all student’s academic and social needs, allowing students to feel confident in their work.
